Job Description

Akkodis is seeking a Quality Assurance Engineer for a full-time / direct hire position in the railroad industry in Waterford, MI . We are looking for candidates with experience in railroad industry standards, AAR M‑1003, FRA compliance, ISO 9001, metal fabrication, railcar inspection, or mechanical/industrial QA for this role.

Rate Range: $106,000.00/year to $140,000.00/year; The rate may be negotiable based on experience, education, geographic location, and other factors.

Job Summary: Responsible for, and technical expertise in, ensuring that the company’s quality management system, procedures, inspection, test, and work processes are in compliance with AAR, FRA, and associated industry-related standards (ISO), regulations and requirements. Additional primary responsibilities include the performance of dynamic process audits to ensure company practices and work performed complies with pre-defined standards, regulations and requirements. Provide detailed assessment reports to associated parties for the identification of follow-on continual improvement initiatives and activities. Lead problem investigation, critical-to-quality product, and process improvement activities. The majority of the assigned tasks require the individual to work in an independent and collaborative nature. Moderate travel is required and therefore is a candidate for working out of home office for the balance of the work time.

Quality Assurance Engineer job responsibilities include:

  • Execute a data driven, performance improvement approach to develop new and/or enhance the existing company’s Quality Management System, Procedures, Tools and Practices in compliance with:
  • Specific requirements and instructions
  • Field Manual of the AAR Interchange Rules
  • AAR Manual of Standards & Recommended Practices, with emphasis on MRP Specification J – Specification for Quality Assurance (Specification M-1003)
  • Applicable Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Railroad Standards
  • Perform dynamic process audits aligned to the company’s data driven (QA Dashboard), performance improvement goals and objectives.
  • Provide detailed assessments (inspections and/or audits) in accordance to QA procedures that contain precise, accurate, and robust details. Follow filing and reporting protocol consistently.
  • Work closely with internal and external groups providing professional quality guidance and technical leadership.
  • Provide technical assistance and/or facilitate activities at assigned locations to resolve product and process quality issues to enhance their ability to meet AAR, FRA, and Company requirements.
  • Must be fully committed to safety, customer satisfaction, and continuous quality improvement, with a demonstrated history of performing duties safely.
  • Support the following additional activities: Fabrication sales to maximize the sales and profit performance of the Company’s design, manufacturing, and railcar modification activities.
  • Review the customer’s product requirements by conducting concept and design review meetings, plant tours, engineering visits, innovative brainstorming, and developing effective products that meet our customers’ needs.
  • The activities of our design engineers to ensure that the drawing packages created accurately reflect the products developed and ensure that all information necessary for the manufacture of such products is provided.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related technical field. Minimum of twelve (12) years of experience in railroad quality control and/or quality assurance, including the capability to conduct process and product audits in accordance with established procedures within repair and field maintenance shop operations, as well as during supplier selection, evaluation, and first article activities.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001.
  • Strong ability to communicate and interface with shop management, supervision, and other associated personnel to obtain an accurate situational assessment.
  • Requires the ability to climb in and under railcars in an industrial and/or railroad environment. Requires the ability to obtain a TWIC card and eRailsafe Badge for access to ports and various railroad locations around the country.
  • Position requires specific knowledge of automobile and truck frames, dynamics of railroad transport, and metal fabrication methods.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and general public.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Proficient in computer software applications, including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Visio, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • AWS CWI or ASNT NDE Level II Certification(s).
  • Prior experience managing/auditing an AAR M-1003 compliant QA program.
  • Previous ASQ or AAR Auditor training and experience working in Quality Assurance.
